The Life Behind the Bees: How does Culture Really Affect You?

What makes everyone so different? In this post I'm going to discuss the effects of cultural heritage on writing.

Affects of Culture

What is beautiful about the world you and I live in are the many various cultures that can be found all over the world or even in your own area. But why might someone be so different from another despite living in such close proximity to each other? Though there are many possible reasons, one of the major contributing factors is their culture. Through different cultures, you are raised holding different values which are the grounds for different priorities.

When 1 doesn't equal 1

As a Chinese born Canadian, I notice that loyalty is extremely important to those from a similar background as me, whether it be loyalty towards family, partners, friends, or even towards China as a whole in the form of somewhat extreme patriotism. However due to the social conditions in China, it is difficult to speak out against the government if you hold any opposition. Loyalty is something that is forced upon them in a way and even after leaving the country, these values stay with them which in turn, get taught and passed down from generation to generation. This means that you may have 2 complete different definitions of “loyalty” from someone raised in China and someone raised in Canada.

Upbringing Effects on The Secret Life of Bees

In the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the author writes about her own life growing up in the 1960s onto the main character, Lily Owens. Throughout this novel, Kidd includes many relevant events at that time including discrimination against women and people of colour. Because of the relevance to her own life, you can see Kidd’s strict baptist raising in the American south reflected through the values that Lily, the main character, has. This includes family and loyalty; however, comparing it to the loyalty I see in my own life, it is apparent that our definitions of loyalty are different but nonetheless, can still be categorized as “loyalty”.

In conclusion, culture not only makes people value different things which alters their way of living their life. However, even with the same values, people could still be completely different as someone’s definition of one word may be different to someone else’s

What are your values and how do you think they came to be? What do you think people tend to value in your culture or religion?
